A lavish alpine paradise
As you make your way up the mountain along smooth, winding roads; the valley below becomes ever further away. When you reach luxury Verbier village, you can immediately feel something in the air. There’s a certain energy in Verbier which can be experienced both on, and off the mountain.
Verbier has a lavish reputation and has achieved celebrity status in more ways than one. Situated in the French-speaking part of the canton of Valais you can see the perfect combination of French and Swiss style.
The local history dates right back to the 12th century when the Verbier castle was first built. It’s ruins still overlooking the Val De Bagnes valley below can be found today including stones, a moat and a well. Fast forward to the early 1900’s and the humble farming region was dotted with stadels and cattle herds. In 1925 the first skiiers made their way up an ambitious 15km hike to ski back down to village Sembrancher.
There was still another twenty years until the first lift was installed in 1946, seeing steady patronage and then booming in the 1960’s. Over the next fifty years infrastructure was vastly improved and it is now a world class resort attracting over 40,000 skiers every winter. You can still see glimpses of Verbier’s rich heritage with historic stadels, windmills and chapels through the village and surrounding mountains.
